China, road plan--China's massive road plans

A string of major developments confirms China’s continuing march of progress towards infrastructure expansion. China's Kunming city is pumping a massive US$21.16 billion into developing its road network as part of the country’s 12th five-year plan for the 2011-2015 period. The plans call for 872km of rural roads to be revamped and some 2,980km of 100% asphalt rural road to be developed. The city will add around 800km of new highways during the period, while 680km of first-class road and 3,000km of second-class road will also be built. Xingtai City in China's Hebei province is planning building 5,472km of roads over the next five years. The plans will require $9.12 billion to achieve. In addition, Xingtai plans to build 1,004km of national and provincial trunk roads, besides constructing four highways during 2011. This total investment will add to the city’s road capacity and by the end of 2015 Xingtai will have a network of 14,000km. China’s Yunnan Province is benefiting from a loan worth $250 million being provided by the Asian Development bank (ADB) for a road project. The finances will help fund a 135km highway project, as well as the construction of a road corridor in the west of Yunnan. The project is due for completion by the end of 2015.
