Fiji's Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama Monday officially accepted civil and construction machines and equipment from China, which will help develop rural areas in the island nation.

Bainimarama signed a certificate of acceptance with Chinese Ambassador to Fiji Han Zhiqiang.

The equipment, valued at 4.1 million Fiji dollars (2.2 million U.S. dollars), includes excavators, dump truck, bulldozers, vibratory rollers, pneumatic roller, motor grade, wheel loader, loader digger, water truck and a truck with crane.

Eliki Bomani, deputy secretary in Fijian Prime Minister's office, said the donation was part of China's direct grant assistance to the government of Fiji.

The Bainimarama government"is really keen on expanding rural development and on quickening the pace of rural development for the rural population, so this is really part of the assistance", Bomani said.

"The equipment is subject to deployment throughout Fiji wherever the need is identified, wherever development projects are being carried out in the rural areas," he added.

The Bainimarama government's aim in 2011 is to improve rural infrastructure throughout Fiji and this has been made possible through the timely facilitation by china, stressed the Fijian official.
