CONWAY - Concrete and asphalt batch plants continue to be a controversial issue in Horry County. Many residents have said that the facilities cause traffic and noise problems. The county said it plans to address residents concerns and try to prevent issues with future batch plants.

The county zoning and planning commission said it plans to iron out some kinks in the current zoning ordinance. Discussions center on the best location for plants that mix and make concrete and asphalt.

"Batch plants are allowed only in planning development districts or in the MA3 zoning district" said Janet Carter, Horry County Zoning and Planning director. "MA3 contains a lot of intense uses that communities often find undesirable."

With several construction projects in the works the county said it needs to find a location for future batch plants.

“Under a proposal, the plants would be allowed in the heavy industrial district," said Cater. "But they also include a list of conditions that would be imposed across the board for future batch plants."

Carter said another option on the table is to allow companies to set up temporary batch plants for public projects.

On Thursday, the county will hold a public meeting on batch plants at 4pm in the Horry County government building in Conway.
