Concrete pumping |St. Charles Parish Council approves $738,000 pumping project

  The St. Charles Parish Council on Monday approved spending $738,000 on improvements to the Coronado Park pump station No. 2 in Luling and awarded a $145,000 contract for upgrades to Killona Park. 


  The pump project will replace the pump station with two 18-inch pumps and place a concrete lining on a 400-foot section of the canal that enters the station. 

  Parts of Coronado Park were hard-hit by flooding during heavy rains in December 2009.

  The existing station has an 8-inch pump that can move 1,400 gallons per minute into drainage canals. The new station will have two 18-inch pumps that will be able to push more than 15,000 gallons per minute out of the area, and a larger retention area, which will allow the station to hold more water, Public Works Director Sam Scholle said.

  Parish officials say the lining will improve the water flow in the area and resolving some subsidence issues. The project also includes installing two discharge pipes under Primrose Drive to the Ellington Canal.

  Workers will also install fencing, lighting and a permanent standby generator. Sealevel Construction was the low bidder for the job.

  Frickey Brothers Construction was the low bidder for the Killona Park project.

  The park project involves installing lighting for two baseball fields, along with additional parking.

  The project received a $100,000 grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

  The council also will consider enacting a sales tax holiday for Aug. 5 and 6, to coincide with the state tax holiday for some purchases of up to $2,500.
