Caterpillar | Caterpillar makes it presence in Milwaukee after sale of Bucyrus

MILWAUKEE - Caterpillar made its presence known in Milwaukee yesterday, by announcing the start of its new mining equipment division at the former Bucyrus International. 


Caterpillar, the world largest maker of construction equipment, completed an eight-point-eight billion dollar acquisition of Bucyrus on Friday. The president of the new division, Steve Wunning, predicted great times ahead for the newly-merged company. He said the world population is growing by millions of people each month – and it is creating a huge demand for the copper and iron ore that can be made by Caterpillar new mining equipment. As China and other nations grow, Wunning says he can’t think of a better industry to be in. And with the acquisition of Bucyrus, the 38-year-old Wunning says Caterpillar will now offer the broadest product lines in the industry. 


Caterpillar and Bucyrus announced the deal last December. It was mentioned at the time that Caterpillar would create a new mining equipment division at the Bucyrus facilities in South Milwaukee and Oak Creek – and the work would continue as is. As the mining demand grows, Wunning said Caterpillar would create jobs in Milwaukee, not cut them. 


So far, the big change is the name. Except for the old company museum, there is hardly any public sign that Bucyrus had existed for over 130 years. Wunning said it was not done out of disrespect. But in his words, “We need one face for the company, not two.
