Wirtgen | German construction equipment maker Wirtgen targets Indian market

PUNE: Targeting the central government''s ambitious road construction plan of building 20 kms of road a day, German construction equipment maker, Wirtgen, will launch a second product in the market. 

Stefan Wirtgen, chairman of the over Euro 1 billion family-owned group, said they will launch more products now that they have a manufacturing facility in India. He was speaking on the sidelines of the formal inauguration of its fourth plant outside Germany. 

"Now that we have a manufacturing plant here, we can offer the full package of products in India. We started with an 11 ton, single drum roller and in another 18 months, we should be able to bring in our second product, an asphalt roller," Mr Wirtgen said. He added that the machine will be modified to meet Indian conditions and that local sourcing was essential. 

Added Ramesh Palagiri, managing director, Wirtgen India, "The second product will be a 9 tonne, two-drum roller. We have also started an operator school, offering a three-month training to ITI graduates who can then be placed with our customers. We have also set up an after market business, which includes refurbishing old machines, since Wirtgen has been in India for over 15 years," Mr Ramesh said. 

Wirtgen India revenues last year were Rs. 240 crore and it is projecting a 22% growth this year. It expects the after market business to eventually account for 30% of revenues, with refurbishing and re-conditioning providing a major chunk. At present, refurbishing accounts for 8% of the after market business. 

The Wirtgen India factory at Bhandgaon, about 55 kms from Pune, is located on a 25 acre plot, allowing for future growth. Currently, it has the capacity to make 200 machines a day, on a single shift basis, thus rolling out a machine a day. 

Globally, Wirtgen comprises four brands, Wirtgen machines having applications for milling of roads, Hamm being road rollers, Kleeman for mining applications and Vogele for pavers. The company has begun local assembly of the Hamm rollers.
