Pressure | Construction equipment suppliers under pressure

  Multidisciplinary equipment supplier WAM South Africa is confident that it can weather the downturn in the local construction sector by focusing on supplying its products to a range of other sectors, such as the food and beverage, wastewater and renewable-energy sectors.

  The company, which is the local supplier for Italy-based WAM, notes that the South African construction industry is currently struggling, owing to a lack of new projects and the volatility of the rand.

WAM South Africa GM Emilie Marchand adds that the global construction industry is struggling amid fears that another global recession may occur.

  This, in turn, puts equipment suppliers under pressure.

  Further, she notes that, besides the volatility of the rand, the presence of Chinese companies that import cheap, and sometimes inferior, products into the local market also negatively impacts on South African and African suppliers.

  Marchand says this is making it difficult for the local suppliers to compete.

  However, she warns that cheaper components from China may prove to be costly in the long run, as unreliable quality and service can lead to machine breakdowns and increased costs related to unscheduled downtime.

  She says that WAM South Africa is maintaining high equipment and service standards.
