Caterpillar | Caterpillar sells $4.9 billion worth of construction equipment in latest quarter, revenues up 41 per cent

Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) of Peoria, Illinois Monday released its financial results for the three months ending September 30, reporting a 41 per cent increase in revenues year-over-year.
Revenue for the third quarter was $15.716 billion, up from $11.134 billion in the third quarter of 2010. All figures are in U.S. currency.
Construction machinery sales alone were $4.9 billion, up 41 per cent from $3.466 billion during the same period in 2010.
Growth in the global economy improved demand for commodities, and commodity prices remained attractive for investment, the company stated in a press release. This was positive for mining in all regions of the world. Construction activity continued to grow in many developing countries. In developed countries, despite a continued weak level of construction activity, sales increased as a result of customers upgrading machine fleets and replacing some older equipment and dealers refreshing some equipment in their rental fleets.
Caterpillars products include construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives. It had 121,513 employees as of Sept. 30.
Profit attributable to shareholders for the quarter ending Sept. 30 was $1.141 billion, a 44 per cent-increase from $792 million in the third quarter of 2010.
As of Sept. 30, Caterpillar reported total current assets of $36.864 billion on its balance sheet, including $3.229 billion cash and short-term investments. Total liabilities were $63.063 billion, including $17.878 billion in long-term debt due after one year in financial products and $8.903 billion in long-term debt due after one year for machinery and power systems.
