Pedestrian Plaza closer to finish

Workers with Aarons Concrete Pumping Inc., of Eldersburg, Md., pour exposed aggregate concrete for the paths that will meander through grassy lawns on either side of East King Street as part of the Town Square Pedestrian Plaza project that is nearing completion. The boom of the Putzmeister pump, which was mounted on a Mack truck chassis, can reach out about 150 feet to pour concrete in hard to reach spots with its 6-inch nozzle. The crew of about 10 poured 153 linear feet of 4-foot-wide sidewalks and 26 linear feet of 2-foot-wide sidewalks in about three hours Monday. The walkways were edged with reclaimed bricks found on East King Street beneath several layers of asphalt. The $1.6 million Pedestrian Plaza project will transform the public square, replacing the brick plazas in the 100 block of East King Street with lawns, shade trees, paths, a performance stage and other amenities. An island is planned for the middle of East King Street, featuring a fountain, memorials and possibly a statue of Gen. Adam Stephen, the founder of Martinsburg. A couple of federal grants and matching grants from the city is funding the project. Triton Construction, of Nitro, is the general contractor. Grove DallOlio Architects were the designers, and Chester Engineers did the engineering work for the project.
