World of Concrete 2012 preview
Taking place in January, in Las Vegas, US, World of Concrete is a major event for the construction equipment industry. Despite difficult market conditions, the 2011 event attracted an audience of more than 55000 registered visitors, with 1354 exhibiting companies occupying more than 56000 m2 of space at the Las Vegas Convention Centre.
This year's event takes place form 23 - 27 January, with a programme of seminars running alongside the exhibition, which runs from 24 - 27 January. As its name suggests, the show is aimed at the concrete and masonry sectors, but its appeal is wide, with many of the household names in the construction equipment and earthmoving sectors taking stands.
New machines
Gomaco's stand will feature its new 4400 barrier slipformer - a machine designed specifically for the road barrier construction, and which is able to form on either the right or left-hand side.
Operators will appreciate the U-shaped platform, which offers excellent visibility, and which is also vibration-isolated from the rest of the machine. It is also one of the quietest working platforms in the industry and the 4400 also features Gomaco's G+ control system, which can operate in a variety of languages.
One of the key features of the 4400 is its quick set-up time, and the ability to quickly change between left- and right-sided slipforming. The machine also makes use of Gomaco's new Hook-and-Go mold mounting system, which allows molds up to 1 m high to be quickly mounted. These are fed by a new 406 mm auger, designed to have the ideal pitch and speed for transporting low-slump concrete.
Power Pavers meanwhile will feature its new SF-1700 compact slip-form paver, which has a maximum working width of 7.5 m and is aimed at contractors looking for a two-pass machine for highway work.
The frame of the SF-1700 is based on the company's larger SF-2700, but with a smaller engine and main frame width, the new paver is a more compact, economical alternative. Standard equipment on the SF-1700 includes a 160 hp (120 kW) Cummins engine, spread auger and tamper bar, and 12 Wyco vibrators.
Reed will be showcasing its C50SS concrete pump, which has been designed for long distance pumping applications like tunnelling and high-rise construction. Power comes from a 164 kW Cummins engine, and the unit can deliver up to 41 m3 of concrete per hour at a pressure of 138 bar.
This impressive performance comes in a small package, with the trailer-mounted unit measuring just 4.67 m in length.
Phoenix Curb machines meanwhile will be unveiling its new 7500 compact slipform curber. The unit weighs in at less than 10000 lbs (4.5 tonnes), can cope with tight corners and can automatically follow a string line.
New from Schwing America at the show is the S 43 X concrete pump, taking the company's offering in North America to 16 boom pumps. The new model has a 43 m RZ five-section boom, and is available either in a Z-folding or roll-and-fold configuration.
The new machine incorporates Schwing's Super X outriggers that set-up fast and provide a compact and stable platform for pumping. These curved front outriggers telescope out and around obstacles without extending past the truck's front bumper allowing placement of the pump as close to the pour area as possible.
Aquajet's stand will feature its new 710 V Classic Aqua Cutter hydrodemolition robot. The machine has a range of new manual and automatic features and is designed for use on a variety of concrete structures. It can achieve removal depths as high as 1 m.
Improvements have been made to the machine's programme settings, with several parameters easily selected and adjusted on the colour display via multilanguage operator instructions. The operator can also adjust many settings and parameters manually.
Minnich Manufacturing's stand will feature its new A-1-UTL pneumatic utility drill. This lightweight unit has low air requirements and the company says it can both outlast and outperform electric hammer drills.
The A-1-UTL can drill either vertically or horizontally and is available in two models - the A-1-24 UTL which will fit in a 24" (610 mm) space and achieve a 7" (178 mm) hole depth or the A-1-30 UTL which will fit in a 30" (762 mm) space and drill a 10" (254 mm) deep hole. This makes with unit suitable for small spaces where many larger pneumatic drills just won't fit.
Chicago Pneumatic will be showcasing new MS tampers weighing from 64 kg to 84 kg, and able to deliver centrifugal forces from 14.8 kN to 21.4 kN. Honda engines power both the MS 620 and MS 680, while the MS 840 is powered by a Hatz diesel engine, and is the most powerful MS tamper in the Chicago Pneumatic range.
The interchangeable bottom plates are 229mm wide on the smallest unit and 280mm wide on the others.
