With Indonesia recording its fastest economic expansion for 15 years last year, it is hardly surprising that its construction and cement markets are booming. A key driver for this strong growth pattern has been the robust development of the property sector. "What is even more remarkable is that this development is likely to be sustained as growth becomes more widespread across the country and into other property sectors, ie not just residential but also commercial property," says analyst Andy Lesmana of PT Nomura Indonesia in the latest report on the country's cement industry by the leading cement magazine International Cement Review (ICR).

"Cement sales advanced 17.7 per cent YoY taking full-year Indonesian demand to 48Mt," he adds in the June issue of ICR. Local cement companies are currently in a race to build extra production capacity as domestic cement consumption is set to remain high in the medium- to longer-term as the country develops not only its property markets but also its infrastructure.
